Anime Watch #7 Addendum

Written: 04/10/96

In Anime Watch #7 I said I would be contacting AD Vision to confirm they have picked up Ushio & Tora. I also asked some questions about laserdisc releases. Below is the complete text of the e-mail I recieved back. Paragraphs prefaced with a :">" are me.

> In a recent COMICS BUYER'S GUIDE article it was said that you have licensed the anime: Ushio & Tora. Is this true? If so do you plan to release it on laserdisc?

Yes, we plan on releasing it some time in early fall, I don't have exact release dates yet. I also don't know what the current LD plans are but I believe it will be released on LD.

> I had heard that for some reason you didn't want to do laserdiscs and that was why you have done so few to date.

The only reason we have released so few LDs to date is that we were too busy doing the videos. LDs don't make nearly as much money as VHS and as a small company we had to get our priorities straight. As we have grown, we have started releasing more LDs and have many more in the works.

> Other than the dearth of LDs the only other complaint I have about you so far is putting just one half hour episode on the Gunsmith Cats LD. $35 for a 1/2 hour video is a little pricey ($1 per minute, I thought those days were gone!). It would have been better to put 2 episodes on the disc. I look forward to your reply.

I too would like cheaper LDs but they don't have a large profit margin or a large market. Still, I like this price a lot better than the cost of the original Japanese LDs I bought in the past. The more LDs we can sell the lower the price we can sell them for but we have to grow the market first.

Update 04/18/96:
I have recieved info from Manga Video that their Guyver release is a redub and not just a repackage of the old US Renditions dub. Considering the voice actor problems of the old dub, the Manga Video version might be worth checking out even if you have the US Renditions version.
