Blue Seed

written: 02-03-1997

Blue Seed is an action-packed and humorous series brought to us by AD Vision. It is available on tape subtitled or dubbed or on bi-lingual laserdisc with closed-caption subtitles.

The human world is under attack by the Aragami; evil demonic plant creatures. The Aragami themselves look like small, blue, odd shaped seeds. They possess other creatures and mutate them to serve their purposes. Humans can't be possessed by them because of their intelligence.

According to prophesy, there is one sure way to dispose of the Aragami. Kill the Kushinada, a person descended from a certain bloodline. At the beginning of the series, the current Kushinada, a girl named Kaede (sounds like Katie in the dub) disappears into the realm of the Aragami, so the onus of the Kushinada falls to her twin sister, Momiji (pronounced Moe-me-jee) , who was raised apart from Kaede and knows nothing of all this, not even that she has a sister.

To see to Momiji's protection, she is taken into custody by the TAC, a special police/military unit set up to fight the Aragami.

Momiji has another protector, Mamoru Kusanagi. Kusanagi is a man with seven of the blue seeds implanted in his body making him no longer fully human, but very powerful. He was created to protect the Kushinada until the Aragami could find a way to kill her without it destroying them. He is a capable and deadly warrior and also a bit of a pervert. This ties in well with a running gag in the series concerning Momiji. It seems she is in the habit of wearing panties with funny animal characters on them. She also wears short skirts and is a bit clumsy. This results in her periodically tripping and falling, causing her skirt to ride up revealing what today's funny animal is and embarrassing the heck out of her. If she doesn't trip then Kusanagi will flip up her skirt to reveal the funny animal. Naturally, Momiji doesn't find this at all amusing, so she end up going ballistic and chasing Kusanagi around a lot (baka! baka! baka! - baka is a Japanese word that vaguely translates as: stupid, fool, jerk, etc., something along those lines). Others in the cast soon take an interest in this as well, usually flouting Momiji's efforts to keep the state of her underwear from public knowledge.

The mix of adventure, horror, giant monsters, super powerful people and slightly risqué slapstick humor makes this series a lot of fun. I give it a top recommendation.
