First up is Urusei Yatsura, based on the manga by Rumiko Takahashi, this hilarious series is a top fan favorite. This series ran for 50 tapes worth on the TV episodes alone (at 100 min. per tape) plus 6 movies and at least 11 OVAs. It is being brought to us subtitled from Animeigo. Ah, how to describe such a long running series? Let me introduce some of the characters and tell you how things start off and give you my assurance that it just keeps getting better from there. Ataru Moroboshi is the world's unluckiest teenager. He was born on Friday the 13th, a black cat crossed his mother's path on the way to the hospital and his father broke 3 mirrors on the day he was born. Bad luck isn't his only talent though. He is also the world's greatest lecher. His main requirements for a girl to chase seem to be that she be good looking and (usually) breathing! Due to his obnoxious personality he is routinely rebuffed by every girl he meets. This brings us to Ataru's girlfriend Shinobu. She also rebuffs Ataru when he gets too fresh (which is usually). She is a very pretty slip of a girl who just happens to be stronger than 20 Mr. Universe finalists! A slap in the face from her should be enough to straighten out (or kill) anyone; except Ataru that is, he is used to it by now. Next up is the series most popular character, Lum. Lum is from another planet. She has green hair, 2 horns on her head, fangs and can generate devastating electrical bursts and fly. She usually wears a yellow and black tiger-striped bikini. She comes to Earth with her people to conquer. They offer the Earth people one way to escape being conquered. An Earth man must play a game of tag with Lum and if he wins the Earth will be spared. To win the man must touch Lum's horns. The aliens computer picks the man to be Earth's champion and it is none other than...Ataru Moroboshi! To make a long story short and to not give away too much; Ataru, through deceit and chicanery manages to win, but through a misunderstanding Lum thinks Ataru asked her to marry him, and she agrees! Shinobu stalks off in a huff and when Ataru tries to follow Lum gives him a taste of her electric medicine. From this point on Lum always, even when angry at him, refers to Ataru as "Darling". As the series proceeds many other weird and interesting characters are added to the cast. The slapstick humor and outright weirdness counter balanced with some real emotional depth make it easy to see why this series is so popular.
